Abstract

Consumption of alcoholic beverages correlates with the damaging process of cell in particular organs which initiate many diseases. In some communities at Ambon City (Indonesia), the consumption of a traditional alcoholic beverage, called sopi, potentially become a risk factor for deterioration of liver function and type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the consumption of sopi against aminotransferase as a marker of liver function test and blood glucose levels as a marker of DM in healthy subjects. The study was conducted using crosssectional design with laboratory observations on serum samples of 28 subjects in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. JA Latumetten Hospital and the Medical Laboratory of Ambon. The data were analyzed using paired samples t-test with SPSS 20.0. The results showed that AST levels increased in 93% of subjects (mean 47.93±18.49 U/L), ALT level increased in 18% of sopi addicts (mean 46.89±14.10 U/L) whereas low glucose levels was found in 82% of subjects (average GDP level of 57.39 mg/ dL and GDS of 92.32 mg/dL). In conclusion, this study showed that there was no significant correlation between the high level of ALT and AST enzyme to the age of subjects and duration of sopi consumption. However, the quantity of sopi indicated a significant positive correlation to the increase of ALT and AST level as well as the decrease of blood glucose level.
