Bioactive Screening of Bidens biternata (Lour) Merr. & Sherff Leaves Extract as Hepatoregenerative Agent in Rat Induced Acetaminophen
Abstract
Empirically, Bidens biternata (Lour) Merr. & Sherff is used in Timor Island to treat liver diseases. This plant has approximately 60 flavonoids possessing various effects such as antioxidant and anti-inflammation. This research was conducted to evaluate the hepatogenerative effect of ethanol extract of B. biternata leaves on rats suffering from liver disease induced by acetaminophen using ALT, AST and bilirubin as parameters. The animal model used in this research was 12 rats divided into 4 treated groups. After administration of acetaminophen, all groups were treated by giving 1% Na.CMC to group I (negative control) while group II, III and IV were administered ethanol extracts of B. biternata at the dose 50; 100; and 200 mg/kgBB, respectively. This treatment was given for 14 days. According to statistical analysis, no significant effects were showed among groups administered ethanol extract of this plant. However, all of B. biternata treated groups gave significantly (p<0.05) hepatogenerative effects compared to negative control. In conclusion, ethanol extract of B. biternata at all given doses decreased ALT, AST and bilirubin level indicating that the extracts showed hepatogenerative effect on rats suffering from acetaminophen-induced liver diseases.
